The dream outdoor living space varies for everyone. Whether your backyard revolves around an outdoor kitchen for family cookouts, a patio space for entertaining your guests, or maybe even both, what makes each outdoor living space so amazing is the personalization behind them.

While designing your dream backyard may seem intuitive, it’s even easier to rush into an unfinished plan, only to wish you had spent a bit more time outlining your outdoor living space design after it’s been built. But you have nothing to worry about!

An outdoor living space should be both functional and aesthetically beautiful, and to avoid any “designers regret,” as well as limit any spending on future redesigns, you’ll want to remember these outdoor living design tips!

1) Understand The Purpose Of Your Outdoor Living Space

Designing the perfect outdoor living space begins with understanding how you intend to use it.

And yes, we understand how silly and obvious this sounds — after all, it’s going to be used for “outdoor living,” right? But, what exactly is the purpose of an outdoor living space?… Is it to enjoy all the peace and natural remedies that nature has to offer? Is it to design the ultimate backyard bachelor pad for Sunday night football? Or maybe it means creating the perfect late night spot for family s’mores around the fire pit?

The ultimate “purpose” of an outdoor living space differs for everyone, but this shouldn’t limit you to a design that allows you to cater to your every backyard want and need! Understanding how you intend to use your outdoor space will not only allow you to optimize the area you have to work with, but help to avoid any redundant design ideas.

The worst possible outcome is designing a backyard that you don’t even like!

2) Create A Lasting Dream Design

Now that you’ve considered how you intend to use your backyard paradise, you’ll want to consider any foreseeable changes and problems that may occur. When designing your dream outdoor living space, always try to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. You might ask yourself:

  • Where might I need lighting for when it gets dark outside?
  • Will the outdoor kitchen be within close proximity to the sink and fridge?
  • Can my outdoor living space handle larger parties? Is it child friendly?
  • How can I position my outdoor living areas to maximize the amount of natural sunlight?
  • Is my entertainment area equipped for when it’s cold out? When it rains? When it snows?!

Try to think of as many questions as you can during your designing process, then you’ll be able to move forward with a design that aims to solve your problems, not create more.

Your outdoor living space shouldn’t only have to serve a single specific function. This is your baby, and it should be everything and anything you’ve ever wanted in a backyard! We just hope that when you’re designing your dream living space, you’re able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture!
